TERRIFYING DEBUT “ECO-THRILLER” EXPOSES PHARMA INDUSTRY WORK IN THE RAINFORESTS
München, Deutschland, July 1, 2007 - PHARMA, the debut novel by Rip Gerber, will be launched by Heyne/Random House in Germany this month. Markus Naegele, editor for Heyne, announced the highly anticipated publication today. “Rip Gerber has written the most compelling ecological thriller of our time,” Naegele said. “PHARMA is a gripping thriller and a fascinating window into the drug industry. After reading PHARMA, you will never look at plants the same way again.” Joe Veltre, of the Artists Literary Group, said of PHARMA: “Gerber has gone beyond the standard thriller and presented science that makes you stop and think, with the most irresistibly brilliant and disturbing characters.”
PHARMA details a race against escalating biological terror, as pharmaceutical scientists struggle to contain a plant parasite that is rapidly spreading across Brazil. From the depths of the Amazon rainforest to the boardrooms of the healthcare conglomerates, PHARMA unfolds at a dizzying pace, as an engineer, a scientist and a computer hacking teenager find themselves in the path of an unspeakable plague: a natural evolution resulting from mankind’s careless tinkering with Mother Nature. But this time, science may not prevail. PHARMA is a page-turner of intricate plot twists and eye-popping science that keeps you rooted to the end; it will forever change how you think about the environment.
The author is a former biochemical engineer and technologist. He began his career at the Central Intelligence Agency, categorizing Soviet newspapers and evaluating recruits in the Psychological Assessment Division. He designed Firestone’s first chromatic polyethylene manufacturing plant, launched the financial industry’s first online credit card application while at American Express, ran global marketing divisions for two advertising agencies and served as Chief Marketing Officer for two public software companies. He received his biochemical degree from the University of Virginia and his Masters from Harvard Business School. Rip lives in California.
